Education Basket: How to Ripen Bananas

If you want to eat your bananas soon, you can speed up the ripening process using natural gas or warmth. Alternatively, you can cook them as they are or eat them green for the health benefits.
You Can Ripen Bananas Faster
Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which triggers ripening. You can trap this gas to accelerate the process:
The Paper Bag Trick: Place your bananas inside a closed paper bag. Do not use plastic, as it blocks necessary oxygen.
Add Companion Fruit: Toss an apple, avocado, or an already-ripe banana into the paper bag. These fruits release high amounts of ethylene gas and will force the green bananas to ripen within 1 to 3 days.
Find a Warm Spot: Keep the bunch together and move them to a warm area, like near a sunny window or on top of the refrigerator.
How to Cook Green Bananas
Green bananas are highly starchy and behave much like potatoes or plantains. If they refuse to ripen, you can use them in savory cooking:
Green Banana Fries: Slice them into strips and fry or dehydrate them to make crunchy banana chips.
Boiled Bananas: Peel and boil them in salted water. This is a traditional Caribbean side dish that pairs wonderfully with savory stews and meats.
Tostones: Slice them into thick rounds, flash-fry them, smash them flat, and fry them again until crispy.
Health Benefits of Eating Green Bananas
You can absolutely eat them raw if you don't mind the firm texture and slightly bitter, less-sweet taste. Green bananas are highly packed with resistant starch, a type of carbohydrate that acts like fiber. This means they digest slowly, feed good gut bacteria, and cause a much lower spike in your blood sugar compared to yellow bananas.
